RealNetwork's "Harmony" Release Creates Discord and Misinformation

If you are the type that pays even a little attention to the online digital music industry, or if you use an MP3 player, you should check this out: RealNetwork's "Harmony" Release Creates Discord and Misinformation

"Universal compatibility is critical to the growth of the digital music market," said David Pakman, Managing Director, Dimensional Associates, Inc. the private equity firm that owns eMusic.com, Inc. "The MP3 format is already the established standard providing universal portability and compatibility. When consumers buy digital music, they want to be sure it will play everywhere. Music sold through eMusic plays on any and every digital music device."

I hear you. I read the story about RealNetwork's Harmony release on Reuters yesterday. The iTunes store *still* isn't available in Europe, and so surfed over to RealNetwork's site to see if it might be something I could use.

What a mess. I couldn't figure out where the music store even was, because the site is completely wrapped around trying to sell you their RealPlayer 10--which is a compulsory "service" tied to their new media player. Evil marketing bollocks!!

By the way, have there been any changes to EMusic's licensing agreements, which would make it more worthwhile to sign on from here?

nom the licensing is still controlled by the labels and distributors, so emusic is forced to deal with US and Euro licensing separately. it's still all a big mess.

itunes did launch some euro stores, but I don't know if the danish version is included or not.
