Ron Reagan

The New York Times | Magazine | Questions for Ronald P. Reagan: The Son Also Rises

How did your mother feel about being ushered to her seat by President Bush?

Well, he did a better job than Dick Cheney did when he came to the rotunda. I felt so bad. Cheney brought my mother up to the casket, so she could pay her respects. She is in her 80's, and she has glaucoma and has trouble seeing. There were steps, and he left her there. He just stood there, letting her flounder. I don't think he's a mindful human being. That's probably the nicest way I can put it.

Ron, I have enjoyed your intellectual view and ability to keep up with the Republicans on facts. But tonight, when on After Hours, questions were raised on why John Kerry voted as he did for the first Gulf War, would you please check on something for me? (I’ve read it different places, seen it on C-Span and maybe on the Phil Donahue show when he was on MSNBC.)
The gist was that it wasn’t going to pass in Congress, so many people on both sides were not for it. Then Geo. Bush Sr. brought in a young girl who supposedly was from Iraq and she told a sad tale about Saddem}s people (these are the facts I’m not sure of — the ‘who’ they were supposed to be) but she told how these people came in and killed all these little babies—in an orphanage, I think and this sad, emotional story is what tipped the scales to getting for Bush just enough votes to go into the Gulf War. Kerry wasn’t one of those taken in.
It later turned out that this girl was a 13-year-old daughter of a foreign ambassador that Bush sr. was chummy with, and the entire thing was a lie. She, it was said by someone, later had to go underground because the entire the truth was found out. She is an adult now, of course.
If that wasn’t bad enough, Bush jr. repeated this entire story, long ago proven to be a lie—but they care nothing about lying—yes, I can only use the word Lying—when he spoke to the U.N. the first time. Please check this out. I’ve wanted to somehow get this info to the Kerry people don't know how but if you could find the info, you could get this out. These people have lied and lied so much I cannot believe anyone with a brain cell would think of voting for another term of Bush jr. Even his dad looks fairly good after him.
I'm able to watch C-Span and news shows all day while working so I know far too much and it's maddening to hear outright lies, manipulated words, and attempts to destroy Kerry as they did to mcCain, Max Cleland, Ann Richards, anyone in the way. How do they get away with it? I am pleased that Pat Robertson’s comments got out there because though he supports Bush at that time he was terrified how this would turn out he was so against the war. He hasn't denied it since, though Bush has (lying no problem to him). But it fits with what Paul Wolfowitz believed—and others—seven days in and out, air, clean, no deaths.
The Swift boat vets have finally been proven wrong b ut they did much damage—and will keep hammering away.I'm shocked at the number of people who believe it—have written a deal for a newspaper here after someone I told the truth to asked me to do so as her military family (Democrats) were voting against him because they beleived what they show on screen in the commercial is what KERRY said, not what the other reported.
Dick Cheney and Bush can say anything but Democrats don]t attack it, are too mannerly I guess. Kerry's comment about Mary Cheney I believe was innocent. He said we are all children of God's (which they ignore. I believe what led him into discussing Mary was that Edwards got such a warm and fuzzy moment from Dick Cheney when he brought it up—õt one sentence but several saying thank you. Of course he didn’t answer the question since he and Bush are on opposite sides, so he couldn’t, but he seemed sincerely grateful to Edwards’ comments—which were more problematic that Kerry's because he said more. The only time I thought Mary Cheney was ‘used” was the first time her dad, then her mom, brought her up on the campaign trail in August. All the talk was about Cheney's warmongering, he was so hated—even Republicans were concerned about him staying on the ticket—so he brought out the topic of Mary being gay and got lots of good press, plus changed the subject. I thought it was a bit low but once that was out in the open… Also they are using it now to change the subject. That's a disgrace to Mary.
I also believe Tewresa’s comment was taken way beyonjd any importance. She spent her first 50-some years being a mother and speaks of that. Some have said she's like Hillary. No, she'd more like Jackie Kennedy—well traveled, has lived abroad (maybe she should have used the word ‘broader’ than ‘bigger’), but she says until her husband was tragically killed (maybe someone whould thinnk of that when they worry about her billionss which she got in the worst possible way—and which were Republican dollars, and as such, just fine for Republicans, until one and one-half years ago when she joined the Democratic party after what was done to Max Cleland by Bush.
How can we focus on such minor things—she, like Elizabeth Dole, were just wandering in their answers, in her case trying to explain how she would be different as a First Laady. Not better, different. It was Teresa who held out her arms and hugged Laura at the last debate, said Laura said she was glad the denbates were over and she just felt like hugging her and did. There was no anger or arrogance in what she said.
But here we are, even I am—talking about this nonsense when the world is falling apart. We are all going to wake up Nov.3rd (or 4th or 5th) and ask ourselves how we got taken in by this fantasy bubble—about the time Bush rushes back to his wars as he always does as soon as elections are over.
Kerry is such a quality, accomplished man, whose life shows character. I wish I knew what to do to wake people up.
I disagreed with your father politically but admired his gentlemanliness. (Loved your story about his thumbs up siggnal and thinking getting the other digit was a sign that his thumbs up was catching on. I watched the entire feneral service because he was my president. But your memorial really brought me up short. Where has he been, I wondered. This is a quick, insightful mind where one can see the electricity crackle even when you aren’t talking. Your father wouold be very proud of you.
I only have one minor complaint—lose the denim jacket, for the most part (most of the time, anyway). Take us as seriously as we take you.
I thank you for putting smart thoughts and interesting ways of thinking out there. Sometimes Hardball has so many Republican voices, so few Democratic or Independent voices—though it's been some better the past few months.
I watch almost anything you are on—except the night you all called the VP debate for Cheney—when he obviously lied and lied all the way through it—and I had to turn to CNN for awhile.
God bless. (I am a Christian Democrat—which they seem to think do not exists) By the way, one of the reasons I so liked the Democratic convention, Kerry’s part, was that I felt that he yanked back God, the flag, the military, and patriotism for Democrats. Republicans insist they belong to them. Even Pat Robertson does—I know because his organization twice refused money from me after learning I was a Democrat and they said I’d go to hell if I voted for Clinton.) I’m sorry but despite Clinto n’s mistakes, he never attacked people, never hit back, was not mean-spirited or cruel, would never try to destroy anyone to win. No m atter what they said about him, I believe God would say he was the better person. And not prideful or judgemental as these others who tried to take him down but keep falling down themselves for gambling, drugs, paying for abortions, womanizing, affairs, etc.—But back to Kerry, for the first time in a decade or more I felt he had reclaimed all those American things for Democrats again and we weren’t seconod-class citizens. My family has fought in many wars. Who do Republicans think they are? I wish someone would make that argument for Kerry, or tell him what he did for every one of us. I cried, it meant so much. It wasn’t for selfishness. And Bush had run around for three y ears acting like he was the top military person in the world. (How is it that he gets away with that with vets??)
You can tell I live in a Republican area with no one to talk to about my political beliefs. Wish I could do more. It all looks so clear to me. They should hire me just to have a clear head that can follow the bouncing ball. (I don]t waht this posted on a public deal, just wanted to e-mail you. Hope I's doing it correctly.
Thanks again for the great job you are doing.
S.M.
